The Trade Union Coalition requested Eircom at Joint Conciliation Council to support the Irish Congress of Trade Unions fund raising initiative “Time for Asia”.

The focus on Time for Asia is on long term rebuilding, helping people get back to work, rebuilding infrastructure and assisting the survivors in rebuilding their shattered lives.  The aim of the initiative is to help those affected by the Tsunami on the 26th December 2004.  People across Ireland are being asked to contribute in the region of one hours pay.  The Unions have advised eircom that Congress hopes to raise two million euro through this initiative.

In order to support this initiative it has been agreed that employees can voluntary contribute an amount in the region of one hours pay.  This will be taken to be 2.5% of basic pay in the case of weekly paid staff or 1.25% of basic pay in the case of fortnightly paid staff.  These percentages will be converted to whole amounts.

While Aid agencies have indicated that they have enough money to meet the emergency needs of those affected temporary shelter, food rations and clean water – the focus of this appeal is on long term reconstruction.

There are two methods by which employees can make a contribution, one is direct contribution from employee and should to be paid to Bank of Ireland, Ballsbridge, ICTU – Time for Asia Account, Branch Code 900973, Account No 77840294 or through payroll deductions.  Employees who wish to have their contribution paid through payroll will be asked to fill in a form which eircom will distribute and send to Colleen Regan, Eircom, HR SSC Centre Manager, Rathedmond, Sligo.  This deduction will be made from Net pay i.e. after tax, PRSI, and pension contributions have been deducted.  Closing date for receipt of forms is 1st July 2005, monies will be deducted by the end of July.  The Time for Asia fund will invite agencies and other federal bodies working in the area to submit projects for funding, also projects must focus on restoring livelihoods and rebuilding infrastructure.

The National Executive Council is requesting all members to support the time for Asia appeal.
