The Communications Workers' Union met with BT members on the 3rd May 2007 in order to discuss recent events and specifically the decision by BT Management not to engage in a meaningful way with the CWU as the chosen representative body for BT staff in the Republic of Ireland. In what was a very well attended meeting, with a lot of new members in attendance the Union set out the events that have led to the current juncture and outlined a number of options available to staff in BT at this time. In addition the Union advised members that a letter had been sent to the Labour Relations Commission (LRC) seeking the assistance of the Advisory Services Division under the provisions of the Enhanced Code of Practice on Voluntary Dispute Resolution (SI76/2004). The Union outlined to those present the process involved in this procedure up to and including the Labour Court. It was agreed by all members present that this was a critical time in the development of the relationship between CWU and BT Management and that it vital for all present to ensure that their colleagues are invited to join the Trade Union. As such it was agreed on the night that each existing member of the union would do his or her utmost to recruit at least one other colleague into the Union. With an ongoing change agenda being pursued by the Company the Union has a very clear role to play in terms of providing advice and guidance to staff which the existing membership has increasingly called upon in recent weeks. In addition to this the Union can also provide representation to staff on an individual basis through the grievance procedures should the need arise whereby the change agenda impacts adversely on their working lives or terms and conditions of employment. It is important for those who could not attend the meeting to note the strength and depth of feeling of those present. The Union was left in no doubt regarding the sense of frustration and anger felt by the members in relation to the disappointing attitude of management towards staff in the Republic of Ireland. It was agreed it is crucial that as many members of staff in BT make the right decision and become members of the Union also. Membership application forms can be downloaded here in order that you may invite at least one more of your colleagues to join the CWU at this important time. Further communications will issue from Union Head Office as developments within BT unfold. |
