The Communications Workers’ Union has tonight welcomed the recommendation of the Labour Court as a potential solution to the current impasse in An Post. The CWU Postal Executive will now recommend to members in the Collection and Delivery area that they accept the change proposals and is calling on An Post management to also recommend acceptance by its board. The Union welcomes the recommendation by the court that An Post workers be paid the overdue Sustaining Progress cost of living wage increases. The Union also acknowledges the decision of the Court to amend its earlier proposals with regard to work practice changes in the Collection and Delivery area of the Company. The Union’s Postal Executive, having considered the Recommendations of the Court this evening, has declared that its campaign of industrial action over non-payment of cost of living wage increases to postal workers is now at an end. The Executive has also decided that it will strongly recommend to its members in the Collection and Delivery area that they should accept the change proposals contained in today’s Recommendation. Commenting on the recommendation, Steve Fitzpatrick, General Secretary, CWU, said “The recommendation of the Court to pay the terms of Sustaining Progress to our members, without linkage to change, is most welcome. “The Union is extremely grateful for the huge level of assistance given by the members of the National Implementation Body (NIB) and most importantly, their decision to bring in the forensic accounts, Grant Thornton. The CWU also wishes to thank the members of the Labour Court for the extremely long hours it invested with the parties over the weekend. The Union is now calling on the Company to accept the recommendation of the Court and to work together with the staff and their representatives, to bring about a successful transformation in An Post in order to provide customers with the high level of service they deserve” he concluded.
