More forest closures: "The house is on fire and the firefighters are walking away"
OTTAWA (Dec. 4, 2008) -- "The pulp and paper mill closures and temporary shutdowns announced today by Abitibi-Bowater are further proof that the economy needs to be priority number one for Canada," says CEP President Dave Coles. "I am totally outraged that Parliament will be prorogued and that a Prime Minister who has served the country so badly in this time of crisis is allowed to walk away and continue his political games."
"The house is on fire and the firefighters have just been told to take a holiday," says Coles. Forestry workers need action now, not two months from now. We simply cannot afford to put this economic crisis on hold. For forestry workers and their families, these are desperate times." (More)
Forest sector needs coalition: union
OTTAWA (Dec. 2, 2008) – The president of Canada’s largest forestry union has endorsed the economic stimulus program for forestry and manufacturing proposed by the Liberal-NDP Coalition with the support of the Bloc Quebecois.
“We are fully supporting the coalition because it addresses longstanding problems in the forest and manufacturing sectors, which the Conservatives have ignored,” said CEP President Dave Coles.
The “policy framework” proposed by the three parties says:
‘The top priority of the new Government is an economic stimulus package designed to boost the domestic economy... Investing in key sector strategies (like manufacturing, forestry and automotive) designed to create and save jobs, with any aid contingent on a plan to transform these industries and return them to profitability and sustainability.’
“This is exactly what we need to hear in the forest and manufacturing sectors,” said Coles. (More)
